The Welsh story

Branwen daughter of Llŷr was given in marriage to Matholwch of Ireland and, after an insult by her half-brother, was demoted to the kitchen and struck daily for three years. She tamed a starling, taught it speech, and sent it across the sea to Bran — and the war that followed destroyed two kingdoms. She died on the bank of the Alaw of a broken heart. Her hope was real and it was also what broke everything.

On the card
